Golf Lessons....Are You Confused About How To go Forward?
Throughout my years teaching, giving over 10,000 golf lessons the number question I am asked is what starts the downswing?
The answer I give is what starts your backswing?
It really depends where you are at the top of your backswing, players who lift their left foot on the way back like Jack Nicklaus will plant the foot on the way down.
But there seems to be a lot of confusion around this transition move people don't really know how to go forward.
The natural tendency is to lunge the upper body towards the ball which gets the body in front of the ball.
Maybe because the human vision system is binocular and clearing the body too early is caused by the brain wanting to turn front on and view the target with two eyes.
The correct downswing actually involves staying back to go forward. What I mean is, as the lower body bumps the upper body stays back and the shoulders remain slightly closed.
(Notice the difference in the intial transition regarding the angle of the shoulders. The amatuer on the left has moved forward with his upper body and the shoulder angle has remained steep, with arms hanging up in the air. Tiger Woods on the right has moved forward with the lower body and the shoulders have unwound correctly, allowing the arms to drop.)

In Tiger's finsh position for his stock shot which is a slight draw his body will finish high.
The scourge of the average golfer is a slice and consequently their finish position is across the body with low arms.
Next time you practice work on staying back with the upper body to let the lower body go forward.
As Ben Hogan said the proper ball flight is a slight draw and the on the journey to good golf your skills should enable you to hit this shape of shot.
